If they baptize they need money. For marriage, and burial they extract money. For praying for the dead they take money. Earlier in the 15th century, money was required for confession and extreme unction (the last rites before dying). To ring the church bells and to pray for the dead they collect money. Is god and his heaven shut to the impoverished? Is He and his sacraments accessible only to those who are able to meet the expenses?
In the dark ages the confessors (priests) solicited sexual favors from the female penitents to pardon their “sins” . Thousands of priests had concubines. This was the case in most of Europe. The Popes and the cardinals and the bishops were no exception. Today we hear of priests who are pedophiles in the United States.
The Dutch catholic scholar, Erasmus wrote in 1518: “The shamelessness of the Roman Curia has reached its climax.” Corruption and immorality were not limited to the popes but to the priests, bishops, cardinals and others.
There was even a common saying that “If you want to ruin your son make him a priest.
