Tools and approaches developed to indentify and measure the component parts of job satisfaction in arrange of work settings. this work is characterized by different emphasizes over time, and underpins much nursing research. taylor (1911) linked job satisfaction simply to mony earned. However, while satisfaction with pay still remains a componet of many measuring scales for both nurses and other groups of workers, nurses pay has generally been found to contribute little to their job satisfaction (blegen & Mueller 1987, cavanagh 1990). following the second world war, mayol (1945) argued that the key determinant of job satisfaction was qroup interaction and high lighted the importance of good leadership and satisfying personal relations in the work place. this work spells the beginning of anew theoretical emphasis in job satisfaction literature, and these foci continue to be core elements in nursing research. Literature also identifies indirect links between management praeticies, leadership styles and job satisfaction, through the degree of empowerment nurses experience. this is reflected in nurses latitude in decision making, where greater clinical freedom is associated with enhanced job satisfaction (buchaan 1994, lande weerd, and boumoans 1995, adams 1996, morrisonetal 1997, song etal 1997). communication patterns and relation ships with co-workers are fundamental toward life, and have a strong effect on how nurses carry out and feel about their work, and the quality of care achieved (blegen and Mueller 1987, Cochrane jowett 1994).
