Management is a complex subject, in which a large number of factors operate. Some of these may appear to be not so important for obtaining the results, but each of these factors, has its importance and value. Even if one such factor is not attended to properly, it may result in poor performance of the organization. One such field is logistics and supply chain management, which deserves proper attention. Quick and in-time positioning of raw materials at work site, and similarly finished goods at customer/distribution sites, are needed for meeting the customer requirements. This book has thirty-two Chapters, in three parts. Experts from IIT’s, IIM’s, industry and academics have contributed to it. Some of them are prominent scholars in this field. Part one Chapter1
discusses classification of, and models in Logistics management, and arrives at some general conclusions. Chapter 2 discusses, evolution of Logistics management. Chapter 3 provides, introduction to the case studies.
Part two of the book presents 25 live case studies. Chapter 9 discusses some of the major consequences of distribution network design, and provides a strong basis for quantifying benefits of a central warehouse. Chapter 10 provides detailed information about costs connected with warehouse. The influence of I.T. in Logistics is taken up in Chapter 29 of Part three. Summary of some basic modeling, and quantitative analyses for decisions, and implementation of such decisions is given in Chapter 30. Chapter 31 examines supplier-user linkages, in an overall manner. The book gives the background of all the contributors to the book. 153 references, 184 exhibits, 108 questions and 6 annexure, in 32 Chapters in 3 parts, aid the book. The editors and contributors have made an excellent effort, in writing this book. The managerial personnel should go through this book, with the objective of learning supply chain management.
