Voluntary organizations have a distinct and responsible role to play, in the community for the welfare of the down trodden. Their basic and priority objective is, health and family welfare. They work with missionary zeal, but also face various types of difficulties. In seventeen Chapters and eight appendices, this book broadly covers their activities, importance, manpower, health and management, infrastructure resources, financing of activities, cooperation and collaboration, innovations, tribal and mental health care, accountability and disaster management. Innovation in Voluntarism means, some new approach or direction or improvement in quality or quantity of the operations. As per two Chapters, most of these Innovations in Voluntarism are related, to the activities, constraints and generation of funds. Savings and credits, is an important field. Women’s savings groups are more active. These funds are used for giving loans to the needy persons. Various aspects of credit operations discussed are, objectives, features of current practices, their activities, actions for integrated rural development programme, and reasons for failures of cooperative societies, village development associations, credit management groups and their special features.
In India a sizeable percentage of the population being below the poverty line, suitable gainful employment of the women (which constitutes half the population) will be useful, in supplementing the family income. It describes categories in which women are employed, their general problems, overcoming the hurdles, the association of self employed women, their cooperatives bank and its objectives, problems usually encountered by such self employed women, and the help rendered by this bank, its main features, types of activities for granting loans, lessons of such banks, and provides the various novel approaches used by some voluntary organizations for resolving their problems. The book is useful for all those persons, who are connected with voluntary organizations and social welfare, and the general public.
