Reuse of
degraded land in general, and disused surface mining
area in particular is an issue of land conservation. Tayukeng area in the Yangmingshan National
Park of Taiwan is a surface mine, which had been excavated for many hundreds of years for its sulphur. After the establishment of Yangmingshan National Park, the site became partly a special
landscape area and partly a recreational area
according to the park's land use plan. The site was excavated extensively, but the fumaroles and other post-volcanic features such as hot springs are still well represented which form resources for nature appreciation and science studies. Photos and videos taken by outdoor lovers indicated that the site, if reclaimed properly, can be an excellent
geopark for the area.In this study, the site was carefully investigated and divided into three subdivisions, namely, a highly dissected slope land, a fumarole area, and a lava tableland. Each area is illustrated by unique landscape and vegetation. The three areas are assigned different uses in the proposal of a geopark, according to their characteristics. The planning guidelines, the potential threats, the development concepts and the necessary management actions for these areas are proposed. The author recommended that the site can be designated as a geopark in the Yangmingshan National Park.
