One innovation has taken the ability to spread messages or
beliefs to the next level. This is the television and it expresses
all aspects of our
culture through out the day. There are so many broadcasts and so many
different channels it is hard to depict a message for all broadcasts. So narrowing it down to a single television show would only be logical. When looking at an American television show finding the right show can be tough. Every show has different meanings and each meaning may be interpreted in a different way. Although, it is evident that in any show there is a dominant theme that can be sought out. This dominant theme often suggests what part of the population the show is addressed to. In any show when there is a specific targeted audience there will be specific aspects of the American culture portrayed in the show. This is due to the fact that the creatures of the show attempt to allow viewers to identify with the story. By identifying with the story they will be relating different aspects of their life to what the show illustrates. Through main characters it is the hopes of the creator that in some way identity will be found. Whether that is a common interest or a complete opposite opinion the importance is to set that light off in the viewers mind. That light that is turned on can either be negative or positive, it all depends on the viewer and how he or she interprets the ideas of the show.
The show Seinfeld written by both Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld is mainly about the lives of these 4 city dwellers. Anthropologists believe human beings differ in beliefs as their culture differs. All human beings experience inevitable life events such as birth, death and the pursuit of survival. The thing that changes through out the world are the beliefs of these life events. While some see death as an ending others see it as a beginning and celebrate death much similar to birth. These basic beliefs often lay out a foundation for other practices in the culture. The series Seinfeld is a show about 4 friends who all live very separate lives. What bring these people together are the situations they tend to find their selves in. Often through ignorance each character is faced with some type of conflict usually regarding love of the opposite sex. Sometimes it is related to their jobs or simply relationships they have with other people. One episode suggested it is a show about nothing, in many ways that is exactly what it is. A show about all the little things in life which are often not thought about, but always understood. A clear dominant theme would be relationships a single adult may encounter in the big city of New York, and the effects of certain decisions one may or may not make. At first the show was addressed to the dating population of America. Young adults maybe 18 to 35 could be assumed to be in some sort of dating relationship. Over time the show has attracted viewers from all different age groups. The comedy is dry, but truthful in everyway. Each joke is carefully thought out and can be related to most people’s everyday lives. The best part of the show would always be the end when each characters conflict would somehow tie in together to both each other, and the single joke which was said in the beginning of the show.
Each character is different, but at the same time similar. Many groups of friends can identify with the 4 characters. Jerry, who is the down to earth comedian always there to point out and criticize all the things about life sometimes misunderstood. Then there is George who is the outgoing short stocky guy, quick to make a joke. While George may not be the ideal man, his characteristics make him a frequent dater. The show took a chance and included a female in this group of males. Elaine is the typical lady; she is very similar to Jerry, who she dated for a while in the first episodes. Elaine is a funny and outgoing lady who much like Jerry always has something to criticize about life. Finally there is Kramer; he is the crazy, out of control friend of the group which everyone has. Kramer is an unpredictable guy who lives life one moment at a time. With no job, Kramer is a free loading character who surely enhances the program.
Seinfeld is a show which is simply hit or miss. Viewers either love it to death or hate it with a passion. The show is very biased and takes a prospective in life which only people who share it could understand. Personally, the show creates a positive environment and allows one to use humor in place of anger. Some may agree it depicts females in a negative way, but this is not something which is evident. The show simply takes all the funny little things about life and addresses them on a bigger scale. Positive or negative feedback is something of the viewer, and just like any other show it is what you make of it. Human beings are animals of the world who ascribe meanings to their own creation.
