HOW DO WE MEASURE REAL PROFRESS OF A COUNTRY? How do we measure real
progress of a country? This question has been engaging the attention of various world organizations. Since, it was felt that either
Gross Domestic
Product (G.D.P.) or Gross National Product (G.N.P.) alone would no longer be considered as a valid measure of progress as these reflect mainly economic aspects and therefore not enough to reflect the status of the progress in a comprehensive way. In this context in early 1990s United Nations Development Programme (U.N.D.P.) brought out Human Develop
Index (H.D.I.) as a valid measure of a country’s progress. It initially encompasses three major aspects. The education due to its unique importance is one of these components, thus the health indicator and per capita gross domestic product accounts. The H.D.I. is
calculated as an average of the sum of three indexes. Individual index is calculated from the equation:
Index =
Actual Value- Minimum Value
Maximum Value- Minimum Value
In the H.D.I. index Norway is in the 1st rank and India is in the 128 out of 177 country.
