There is a
deeper and rarely explored truth in the phrase 'Education is for life.' In the new millennium, workers are re-educating themselves in a bid to improve their
income and quality of life. Very few people now believe that basic college
Education will help them to secure a higher income and better social existence. It is now imperative to re-skill, or, at the very least, become technologically literate in order to keep up with changes in the digital age. At a deeper level, few of us now realise that 'education is for LIFE', in other words, that it is possible to profoundly alter our
experience of living. For instance, cooking and
eating an exotic meal for the first time, has the potential not only to re-awaken our tastebuds but also to transport us to faraway places AND to re-invigorate our bodies. It may help us to symbolically connect with and understand those who have different dietary practices to ourselves. The ritual involved may begin a transformation in our spiritual and social existence. Why is it that in some cultural groups, meat is not consumed? Why is it that in others,
communal (group) eating is fundamental to the feasting experience? the communal meal reinforces social bonds, it compels families and friends to share and to face each other. It underscores a humbleness within each participant. We do not each have our own plate and we wait for our turn. When we start seeing education as a goal rather than a journey, we miss out on many opportunities to learn. Unfortunately, it is that particular kind of learning that brings life to living.
