PROPOSAL THE CRITICAL ROLE OF ART
EDUCATION
FOR CREATIVITY AND CRITICAL
THINKING
IN
VOCATIONAL
EDUCATION AND
DEVELOPMENT
By Michael Joseph Lellatom
National
Secretary of Ghana Art Teachers Association (GATA), C/o Ayawaso Sub-Metro Education Office, Kotobabi, Box NT1, Accra New Town. E-mail: lellatom@hotmail.com Cell: 020-8127748) Culture Organiser, Ghana Education Service, C/o Ayawaso Sub-Metro Education Office, Kotobabi, Box NT1, Accra New Town. THE CRITICAL ROLE OF ART EDUCATION FOR CREATIVITY AND CRITICAL THINKING IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT As Vocational Education is crucial for total national development anywhere, Creativity and Critical thinking becomes imperative since it aims at producing both learned academics and graduates with marketable skills to be self-reliant, set up their own businesses and employ others anyway. To reduce poverty, Baiden (1996) suggests there is the need to develop human resources to help maintain the economy on the path of steady growth, through job opportunities related to art and involving the visual (fine) arts of drawing and painting, such as Advertising, Architecture, Administration, Education, Therapy, Cartography, Computer Graphics, Entertainment and Special Effects Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Photojournalism. Though Lellatom (2007) authoritatively, but modestly, observes Ghana is already endowed with such renowned enterprising Advertising Artists (e.g. Akora Caren-Barbara Tayviah, Deputy Creative Director of Unik Image), Architects (e.g. Akoras Evans-Anfom and Badger of Krane Construction), Art Educators ( in schools or offices), Painters and/or Sculptors (e.g. Akora Heather Badger, Wiz Kudowor and Kofi Setordji), Graphic Designers (e.g. Akora Kofi Opoku of Origin 8 Satchi & Satchi ), Fabric Designers (e.g. Theodosia Okoh of the Ghana Flag Design fame besides Akora Elike, Akora Tetteh Plahar , Mawuli Okudjeto''s MKOGH, Brigitte Naade Kragbe''s CHEZ JULIE Clothing), Interior Designers, Gallery Owners (e.g. Ablade Glover of Artists Alliance fame), Industrial Designers (e.g. Ekem, Zigah and Unique Ceramics Limited and Ampim Tetteh''s Emefa Jewellery), and Web-Site Designers (e.g. Akora Shansoudin Tetteh), there is still growing unemployment among the educated in the formal sector. However, these make vocational education crucial for national economic development. It is so vital that every effort be made to provide all the resources required to ensure that the graduates are benefit the skills that will make them more marketable and empower them to be self-sufficient to contribute for the nation. Significantly, as the above-mentioned lists is by no means complete, and furthermore, unlikely that any such lists could remain complete for very long, given the ever sheer increasing modern technological advancements, as indeed even now, new demands offer unique career opportunities for people with interests and talent in art, better benefits of national economic development can be achieved with the 2007 Education Reforms. The implementation of the vocational curricular ought to be approached more seriously henceforth for only the sky is thus the limit of holders of art-related careers. Write your abstract here.
