HAMPTON UNIVERSITY is a privately-endowed, non-profit, non-sectarian, co-educational, historically black university.
It is a dynamic, progressive institution of higher education.  It is located in southeastern Virginia and boasts one of the loveliest campuses in the nation with a picturesque watefront and historic buildings and landmarks.  Known by the University family as "The Home By the Sea".  Hampton University was founded in 1868 by Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, the 29 year-old son of missionary parents.  In 1878, Hampton established a formal education program for Native Americans.  Hampton''s historic Native American education program spanned more than forty years with the last student graduating in 1923.  In the early days support for the Institute came from the Freedman''s Bureau, Northern philanthropists, and religious groups.  Hampton University ranks among the top 10 in graduating African Americans with biology, business management, communications, English, journalism and psychology degrees.  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Hall houses the black family institute, etc.  The National Science Foundation has provided $10 million to establish the University''s Nuclear/High Energy Physics (NuHEP) Center for Excellence.  The Department of Engineering in association with AT&T Bell Laboratories offers scholarships to outstanding freshman in chemical and electrical engineering.  Other buildings include the William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library Center for Marine and Environmental Studies and the Univeristy Museum.  The Emancipation Oak was the site of the first Southern reading of President Lincoln''s Emancipation Proclamation, an act which accelerated the demand for African American education.
