Making Your Home a Place for Readers

Article Summary by: kikomonster

Original Author: Gayle
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP PROMOTE LITERACY AT HOME:CHOOSE a quiet time for reading to your child.CHOOSE a special place
for family reading to make it a social habit.LET your child select the book that he likes to read.HOLD the book in a way that the child can see the pictures, you can also let him turn the pages of the books.TAKE time to look and talk about the pictures. You can also make it a learning experience for the child; let him point out the letters, the shapes that he sees, the different colors, etc.UNDERSTAND that reading begins at home. Children read whatever they see at home, so make your home a rich reading environment (you can put name tags on different furnitures in your house ex: chair, table, etc.)YOU yourself should show to your child that you are reading. Children do what their parents are doing.ENCOURAGE your child to read to you. If your child is a beginner in reading, don''t expect them to read the whole story, often times, children interpret first the story in their own.MAKE lists, any kind of list, grocery list, list chores, list of food in the refrigerator, etc.READ aloud to your child everyday.
