Reena Michael started Shiksha Niketan at Kochi,
S. India in 1996, just with 3 children. Today
the institution has grown up with over 125
students. Here learning is activity
based, the children are trained to manage the change of characters, amazing
entertaining and come to the life in the myriad expression of children from
play group to std lV
Only 15 students will be admitted to a
class. No class rooms but students move to different rooms such as maths,
science, social studies and language with their study aids. It is a thematic
learning, where topics are linked a subject is expressed in dance, music,
visuals or words. Children can comprehend things
according to their ability and
their potential is tapped. Teachers are called uncles and aunties. Children are
first respected and then they are taught how to respect others. Here dance
music and other art forms are a must, children are free to express their
creativity. A Kinesthetic teacher is there
to watch and guide, stories are related in such a to promote their imagination. Breakfast is
served in the school kids learn table etiquettes also know about kitchen
equipments ingredients of food etc. Every year the curriculum changes.
Kids are encouraged in
maths mentally than count on fingers. As
for colors they are shown only primary colors
they mix different colors and develop secondary colors and shades.
Children stay at school only ,have campfire, barbeques. They are well explained
and trained to the hikes and panics of society and hard realities of life. The
result of this new educational approach
according to Reena Michael “ A set of competent children who can face
life boldly
