In the second year of Junior High School, one of the Basic Competencies in English subject is “to express meaning and generic structures in simple short essay using written language that is accurate, fluent and acceptable to interact with the circumstances in recount genre”(Depdiknas, 2006). Recount is a genre of text that has function to retell past events. In writing recount text, the students have to use the correct lexical grammatical features and the generic structures.

In the daily evaluation of writing recount text, only 45% students can achieve the score 65. Whereas the classical achievement criteria is at least 80 % students have to achieve KKM (≥65). It means that the teaching process is not successful and has to be improved.

In SMP Sunan Ampel, the method that is usually used to teach writing recount text is writing individually. The students still make wrong in choosing the right diction and using the correct grammar. The teacher does not have enough time to explain the correction result of their tasks one by one. At the next teaching-learning process, the students still make the same wrong in writing recount text. Besides, for many students, writing is difficult enough because they have to develop their ideas into sentences and paragraphs based on the generic structures of the text. Those are the reasons why the teaching process is not success.

Because of the reason above, the writer proposes a solution in form of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method, one of cooperative learning methods in which students are assigned to four-member learning teams that are mixed in performance level, gender, and ethnicity (Slavin, 1994). Then, the writer determined a research entitled “Improving Students’ Skill in Writing Recount Text through Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) at the grade 8 of SMP Sunan Ampel Sumberejo Banyuputih Situbondo 2011-2012 Academic Year”.

This research is a classroom action research that was conducted in two cycles. In every cycle, the procedure are planning, implementing action, observing and reflecting. The data collection method consists of documentation, observation and a writing test. The data analysis method for the qualitative data was inductive, and for the quantitative data was percentage. The achievement indicator of this research is according to the classroom achievement criteria that at least 80 % students achieved score ≥65. All of stages in this research had been done for 5 months starting at 12th July to 27th November, 2011.

Based on the results of the action in Cycle 1 and Cycle 2, it could be concluded that the use of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method can improve the students’ ability in writing recount text in the grade 8 SMP Sunan Ampel 2011-2012 academic year. It could be proved from the results of writing test which pointed out that the students’ score increased in the cycle 1 and the cycle 2 (74% and 82%) and had fulfilled the achievement indicator of this classroom action research.
