Distance
Education to Increase Access to Education
Khilendra
Basntat
Education is
of paramount importance for the mental development of every individual.
However, many persons, especially of developing and least developed countries,
have not been able to seize the opportunity to read and write due to their own
reasons.
Distance
education (DE) offers opportunities for all, no matter where they are. It makes
effective use of new technologies, which are rapidly emerging. It is accepted
by many institutions as an economic way of expanding their activities.
International
experiences show that DE significantly increases access to higher education and
creates an academic environment in the respective countries. Even the
conventional universities benefit from DE because of its improved printed and
visual materials.
Nowadays, the way
educational delivery is emerging reveals that only on campus provision is not
appropriate for all kinds of persons aspiring for further or lifelong
education. Actually, DE is considered a way of providing higher education that
involves the transfer to the students' location of materials that form the main
basics of study rather than the students moving to the location of the resource
provider. DE thus will enormously increase access to education.
Today, DE is
gaining popularity in many countries. One of its reasons is that it is cost
effective and flexible. Through DE universities can help achieve high women's
participation in higher education and reduce the flow of students to big
cities.
