English has become the world language communication. Communication
for the people is supposed to be a vital need. As a social being, they cannot
live alone. In other words, they need to communicate with each other for
various kinds of interests such as: education, culture, religion, politics, knowledge
and science, and many others not to mention here.
It is a natural thing if someone learns the
other language, say, English so he/she will always be dominated or influenced
by his or her native language (source language/SL) for expressing his/her feelings
and ideas. An English teacher wherever he/she works or teaches has to know
various methods of English teaching. He/she can choose one of the methods to be
implemented at his/her school according to the existing curriculum and the
condition of the students. One of the methods of English teaching that still
uses native language is grammar-translation method.
The aims of the research are carried out by the writer are: to find
out the grammar-translation method in the process of teaching and learning English,
to find out the students’ ability in translating an English paragraph into an
Indonesian paragraph, and to find out if there is any influence in the
implementation of grammar-translation method on the students’ ability in
translating an English paragraph into an Indonesian paragraph.
In this research, the writer uses the quantitative approach. In
collecting the data, the writer uses some techniques namely: Observation,
Interview, and test. To analyze the data, the writer uses the formula of
product moment correlation. In addition, the writer uses some books to
understand the data concerning the thesis being written to support it.
After the data have been analyzed, the writer
can draw a conclusion that there is sufficient correlation between X variable
and Y variable. This is because the result of the calculation of the product
moment correlation is 0.60 which is categorized as “sufficient correlation”. It
means this thing can be considered that there is sufficient influence of
grammar-translation method on the students’ ability in translating an English
paragraph into an Indonesian paragraph in a text.
