What your Kindergartner needs to know

Book Summary by: JennRatliff

Original Authors: E.D. Hirsch, Jr.; John Holdren
For the parents of a child ready to enter kindergarten, this book is a must. As part of the Core Knowledge Series, What your
Kindergartner needs to know gives you an outline of what your kindergartner will most likely be learning in school, which will better facilitate the learning process. Alternatively it is great for parents who are considering home-schooling, as it contains much more than just an outline of material.
The Introduction of the book explains what the Core Knowledge series is and why it is needed in today’s educational atmosphere. It also gives the parents the incentive to contact their local educational entity and get involved in reforming if necessary.
The remainder of the book is divided into six sections: Language and Literature, History and Geography, Visual Arts, Music, Mathematics, and Science. Each section delves into its appropriate category with text on various topics, suggested resources and activities that you can do with your child.
The book is very much interactive. The writing is styled to be understood by the typical four or five-year-old, and is organized in a simple yet informative way. The Language and Literature section, with its classic stories and poems, is particularly useful when trying to teach your child about the joys of reading.
The Science and Mathematics sections contain project ideas and methods of teaching that assist a child who may be having difficulty with traditional classroom teaching methods. In History and Geography your child will be introduced to the globe, continents, the United States and democracy, as well as some of the more prominent presidents. The Visual Arts and Music chapters allow you and your child to learn together about different kinds of paintings, music and the interactions of both with the world.
Your child’s education is her future. It is great to know there is a series of books out there that recognizes that and gives parents the tools necessary to ensure a solid educational foundation.
