Media Planning as a career

Book Summary by: Sima C

Original Author: Seema Chugh
Media planners are chiefly related to ad agencies and their primary job is to develop, execute and monitor media plans for
selected clients. If you love meeting a wide range of people and also like communicating ideas, you could think seriously at media planning as a career. You will be an interface between clients and sellers, and would be involved in organizing and buying advertisement space in various media, including outdoor advertisement space. You would be the one to put the ad in the right place at the right time, so that it reaches the audience. Wherever you work, you will be expected to put in good 50 hours or more per week. You would also have to negotiate with media vendors such as radio print and television in order to maximize the impact of the clients’ advertising campaigns.
You can opt for this field immediately after your graduation. However, it will be in your interest to have a business management or marketing degree to make a start. An additional diploma in media studies is an advantage. To move to other positions within an ad agency as most media planners do, it is beneficial to train in other marketing courses, including psychology, accounting and creative design. You require creativity to develop appropriate strategies to promote a client’s brand. It is important to understand a client’s business objectives and take decisions accordingly.
Media planners can divert to other fields as media buyers, advertising executives, and as statisticians. They can also work as copyeditors and editors. Marketing and web designing is also a good career option for media planners.
