Dont snub your
teacher ... sub your teacher ... a practice I picked up in private schools in Turkey, but back to here .. i.e. the UK .. Dyslexia is a problem for the
student and I too
felt that the road ahead was bleak for myself at the time as I was getting one of my teaching qualifications and I was 35 years old .. I had had a ten year
career previous to this in Office work so I felt "behind".
It was
good to acknowledge this to the class and as a result my student piped up that he was /dyslexic/ ... I hadnt encoutered this disability in educational circles before .. so I decided to chat about it with him as a whole group. He explained that he couldnt read words ... on the page .. and that they
symbols did not register in his brain the way they did with other more gifted children.
So what to do .. my career was on the line .. I had to solve this with the Dyslexic student and deal with his problems .......... afterall I was not a miracle worker but a teacher gaining the State Recognized Qualification ......... suddenly the boy and I solved it .. I started writing down poems on the board whose lines follow no particular stanza form at all i.e. to
communicate with the modern reader .. our
dyslexic student found this really useful and wrote down a few symbols .. a good start to teaching dyslexic
students .. towards success ...with poetry .. great success .. in 1981 ...keep on teaching .. good teachers create good students ...
