The
conviction of former Philippines
President Joseph "ERAP" Estrada in the plunder case filed against him is but another
sorry and sad, funny but very serious chapter in the book of what it is really happening and the new culture in the Philippines today.
He was convicted yesterday in the Sandiganbayan ( the Philippines court in charge of hearing the graft cases filed against erring government officials) it was just another"zarzuela" event witnessed by the Filipinos and possibly the whole world.
The former
president was charge with perjury and plunder shortly after being ousted from power by a people uprising,most commonly and popularly called here in the Philippines as PEOPLE POWER. People Power was popularized world wide during the term of President Marcos when he was also ousted from power with the same style. He was replaced by Cory Aquino the wife of murdered latter day hero of the Philippines Ninoy Aquino.
The Filipinos are already expecting the guilty verdict right from the start. Erap Estrada of which he is popularly known was acquited from the charge of perjury.His son Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and lawyer Edward Serapio where all acquited from all charges.
Every Filipinos are aware that the hugely popular former president ( Erap Estrada ) will be convicted because they know that if he is ever acquited, he might be a threat to the present administration which is very on-popular but I think the most important aspect of the
conviction is that if he was not convicted then the reasons for overthrowing him from power six years ago are all lies and false and that most of those who worked and accused him are all wrong and most of those people now are all sitting either as an appointee by the present president or as an elected official. If he was acquited then he is vindicated and most of the current government officials and a lot of powerful businessmen are all wrong all along. That is I think the main reason why he was convicted.
