Mutineers Have the Right to Overthrow the
Democratic Government (Positivist
Philosophy)
Thomas Hobbes on his book Leviathan stated that “every man ought to endeavour peace, as far as he
has hope of obtaining it; and when he cannot obtain it, that he may seek, and
use, all helps, and advantages of war.” The first branch of which rule, containeth the
first, and fundamental law of nature; which is, to seek peace, and follow it.
The second, the sum of the right of nature; which is by all means we can, to
defend ourselves.
According to
Hobbes, From the fundamental law of nature, by which men are commanded to
endeavour peace, is derived this second law; that a man be willing, when others do so too, as far-forth, as for peace, and defence of himself he
shall think necessary, to lay down this right to all things; and be contented
with so much liberty against other men, as he would allow other men against
himself.
As Hobbes clearly
put, if a man cannot obtain the peace he longed for then he may seek or use the
advantages of war. Our government has done a lot of violative thing against the
liberty bestowed upon us by the law, in result to this, a group people; the
Military
Mutineers then opted to invade the Oakwood Hotel in Manila. The means they employ although in
violation of the law is according to Hobbes, a valid means for the fact that it
is their means to attain the peace which they wanted to obtain from the
government. Peace is not just the stereotypical thing, Peace is the attainment
of a purpose, a valid aim in a man’s life, equality in itself, because as
Hobbes stated, nature hath made men so equal in the faculties of the body and
mind. In the act employed by the military mutineers, we can validly justify
that they have the right to overthrow the government, in Hobbes Principle Causes of Quarrel. First,
Competition which maketh men invade for gain, Second Diffidence for safety and
lastly, glory for reputation.
I can say that the
mutineers have the right to employ the means even though unjust to overthrow
the government because it is within the nature of man, in the first principle,
COMPETION, which is the core reason is to invade for gain. In our present
situation, our country have exercised there power within there control which
sometimes have ignored the needs of the people itself, the attainment of
equality. In reality, although we live in a
democratic country, the equality
itself is different to what we learned. The rich is richer and the poor is at
their worst situation. No wonder the military has finally decided to do the
thing they believe somehow will call upon the attention of the proper
authority, the government itself and the people addressing to them that they
can no longer tolerate what is happening, thus, they have the right to do what
they have done because they are part of the community which the government
exercise their sovereignty and their concern for our country.
