Psychoanalysis is a
personality theory that was originally advanced by Sigmund Freud, who is also known as the " Father of Contemporary Psychology". The
basic premise of this theory is that Personality is the product of the interplay between the three powerful forces that drive man into action. The said forces are the following;
The id - This is the reservoir of all the psychic energies that compels man to perform series of conscious and unconscious actions. It contains the basic human instinct that operates on pleasure principle such as need for sex, food, sleep and other pleasure seeking motivations.
This is the most powerful among the three forces and occupies almost 3/4 of the personality. Most Psychologists agree that it is the Commander-in-Chief that
commands the
Ego.
The Ego - This is the center of consciousness of every human being. It is the " mind" in the layman''s concept and the rational
component of personality. The Ego receives informations and commands from the Id and make ways how to realize the wishes and desires of the Id.
The Superego - This is the moral component of the personality. It tells the person what is
morally right and morally wrong. It is the consience of every individual.
