However, the common understanding of emotion can be said as ‘It is a feeling that has both physiological and cognitive elements that originates in the brain’.
Some common functions of emotions:
Instant response
Its mental and physiological wrapping links it mind and brain simultaneously. It is responsible for the instant reaction on particular situations we face in our day-to-day life. On occasions, we feel threatened, and on others, we recognize no danger due to different proportion of adrenaline release due to emotions depending on the type of situation. The physical response evolves from the sympathetic division of the automatic nervous system is associated with the emotional reaction, and affects external body functions.
Durable behavioral changes
Present day experiences become history and remain in our brain for long to affect our future behavior. Positive occurrences of today motivate us to follow that path further to make subsequent happenings like the past or better, and negative occurrences just opposite. That is to say, positive emotions remain with us in a positive manner and negative emotions negatively.
Works as a social signal
Our expressions along with physical behavior depend on the emotional state of ours. Therefore, when we mix with others or interact with others, the opposite side reacts as per the emotional response of ours. When to help, when not; when to keep quite, when to talk; and when to be aggressive, when to be soft, all comes from the emotional action of the other side.
