Courage and Fear

Article Summary   by:puja

The literal meaning of ‘Fear’ by
Oxford Dictionary is ‘an unknown emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain
or harm’ or ‘the likelihood of something unwelcome happening’. It also means
being anxious or afraid of something. It is a negative emotion. But I wonder
what is this, ‘something’? I think this fear is related to ‘possession’ and not
‘detachment’. We on earth are born to love, hate, pray, eat, cry, laugh and be
social. When we enter into relationships, we start to own the person. Or for a
matter of fat, even non-living things we buy or posses. When a daughter grows
up and leaves for another city for work or after marriage, the parents fear
that ‘how will she be after she leaves their cushiony arms’. Or when a boy
leaves for his studies or work out of town. We must believe this song from
‘Natwarlal(Hindi Film) starring Amitabh
Bachchan and Rekha, with lyrics, ‘Tuaba Tauba kya hoga…hona hain joh hoga…hota
hain jo ho jaane do…aane wala, aaega jaane wala…jaageya tum na mano toh jaane
doh’…

What is destined has to happen so
why fear the unknown. So, why fear change or detachment. It is a temporary
phase which must be dealt with courage.

The literal meaning of ‘Courage’

by Oxford Dictionary is ‘the ability to do something frightening’ or ‘Strength
in the face of pain or grief’. It is a positive emotion.

Courage is opposite of fear. It
is our own conscience saying ‘Yes’ to face the unknown. It is a spirit which
says that we must be ready to live, breathe, exist, in any circumstance. Those
with courage do daring like a soldier who is ready to die for his country o the
border. Or a new entrant to a school courageously spends his 1st day
in school smiling and boldly. It is a feeling to adapt to any change in life,
as and when it occurs.

A person who is courageous is
fearless. But I would also like to state that that fear often gives the courage
to face the unknown. When a woman is tortured because she cannot bear a child,
an unknown feeling or power makes her strong to fight back and proof her worth
to all.

Actually fear gives birth to
courage.
