Apparent Mental Causation: Sources of the experience of will

Article Summary by: gonnafly

Original Authors: Daniel M. Wegner; Thalia Wheatley
The article identifies three sources of the experience of will, which are priority, consistency and exclusivity. Wegner and
Wheatley examined the reasons for why these sources have made conscious will of our mind seem apparent as causes of our action. With the “I SPY” experiment, they found that participants came to believe that they have caused the action which were done by confederates following word primes prior to the action. The authors suggested that our actions are caused by our unconscious mind instead of consciousness although the latter normally seems more accountable for our actions.
