We have all been around a baby maybe it was your baby, a niece, nephew, or a friends. So looking at that baby what development periods does a baby go through to become one day a adult and eventually the elderly. These time frames are periods in our life that we all go through that are characterized by certain features. These development periods are characterized as the prenatal period, infancy, early childhood, middle and late childhood, adolescent, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. In some studies late adulthood is further divided into two phrases being the young old and the oldest old.
Live begins in the prenatal period, this involves the time from conception until the infant is born. This phase lasts appr. 9 months and involves tremendous growth that begins with a single cell and grows to a organism complete with brain and behavioral capabilities. After the child is born it is considered a infant. The infancy phase begin at birth and ends around the 18-24 months. At this point in development the infant is totally dependant on adults for all of their care. Next the child enters into early childhood this stage is entered into at the end of the infancy stage and last till about 5-6 years old. This phase is also known as the preschool years. This stage the child starts showing signs of self-sucifenty and the child is beginning to learn to care for themselves. At the end of this phase the child enters into the middle and late childhood phase. This phase last till the child reaches 11 years old. This time is know as to elementary school years. Children that are in this phase are exposed to a much larger world then they were in the previous phases. Skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics are mastered in this phase. When this phase comes to a end the child enters into the Adolescent phase. The adolescent phase is entered into at around 10-12 years and ends near 18-22 years of age. During this phase the adolescent spends more time outside of the family and many rapid changes begin to occur. The next phase is the early adult phase this begins in the late teens and lasts through the thirties. In this phase many parts of life are put into place, such as choosing a career, and for many a career is chosen in this phase. The middle adulthood phase is entered into and next and lasts from about 40-60 years of age. Most find satisfaction in a career in this phase. Entered into next is the last phase, late adulthood, witch begins at about the sixties and ends at death. In this phase the adult is adjusting to decreasing strength and health.
The late adulthood phase can be further divided into the young old and the oldest old. The young old ranges from 65-84 years, and the oldest old ranges from 85 years of age until death.
Many changes occur throughout our life as we encounter these phases. As we come to enter each phase we must prepare ourselves to go through the changes that will occur during that period. As development is studied by professionals they begin to understand more of how we go through these phases and what changes we will occ during these times.
So as we watch and encourage children our children to grow we need to prepare them for what they will encounter.
