Psychological
Theories
The current psychological
theory regarding the interaction
of biological and psycho-social
factors in the development of
mental illness are first, the Jean Piaget Cognitive
Developmental Theory of 1958, which
focused on cognitive (intellectual) development. It stated
that this was the method by which a child will grow up to understand
the concepts of the world, stepwise from birth to teenage. The second
was the Erik
Erikson Psychoanalytic development theory, that development is
experience throughout ones life time. The third was the John Bowdly
attachment theory of development which stated that attachment
is what will enable a developing child to explore the world. (Mental
Health n.d)
Two biological factors that contribute to the development of
mental illness are first depression, as a response to stimulus
such as lose of loved one or other occurrences in daily life, thus
experience a mental state of elevated thoughts and actions, amongst
other; and secondly Alzheimer disease which causes reduced
memory, anxiety and loss of the speech faculty as one progresses to
lose life and is common in the older people. Two psycho-social
factors that contribute toward development of mental illness are
first, smoking such as from cannabis sativa and
secondly, marriage and
social support. Bereaved person may be
lacking in the usual social support and suffer mental illness due to
stresses of life. (Mental Health n.d)
The stress—diathesis model according to Morgan (2002), suggests
that in “suicide vulnerable individuals, stress events
such as adverse life episodes, depression or other mental
illness may lead to
suicidal behavior in which the related
neurochemical parameter is the
hypothalamic—pituitary—adrenal axis.” Pursuant of suicide are
sufferers of mental illness. (Morgan 2002)
