Bakuis the capital of Azerbaijan. Located on the
southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula. Baku is divided into eleven
administrative districts (Azizbeyov, Binagadi, Qaradagh, Narimanov, Nasimi, Nizami, Sabayil, Sabunchu, Khatai, Surakhany and Yasamal) and 48 townships.
The name Baku is widely believed to be derived from the old Persian names of the city
Bad-kube, meaning "city where the wind blows", or Baghkuh, meaning "Mount of God".
The basis of Baku''s economy is
petroleum. The existence of petroleum has been known since the 8th century.
