ABSTRACT A study carried out to analyze spatially the rural housing and farm settlement patterns in Iddo Local
Government area of Oyo State using direct observations, questionnaires, existing data from different sources and the spatial measuring device known as the "Global Positioning System" . The responses of 60 rural dwellers of the study area whose data were collected and analyzed with a structured interview guide. The result observed over the last 26 years shows that, the urban land uses in the area have grown from below 1% of the total land area to over 18% in 2002 and this accelerated growth was witnessed majorly within the last 7 years of the same period. The implication of this is that if the present accelerated urbanization trend continues unabated, the study area could experience a rate of evolution that would transform the area from a rural-semi urban area with less than 20% urbanization today, to an urban area with an urbanization level in the excess of 50% over the next 10 years. This encroaching urbanization comes with its own advantages as amenities like roads, electricity, schools, and industries (which would in turn provide jobs) usually accompany it. On the contrary side, vices associated with urbanization like crime, overcrowding, environmental pollution, land degradation, and others would also accompany the urbanization process. It was recommended based on the findings that; Government legislation on land use should be emphasized, some areas should be designated as forest reserves under strict monitoring, Government farm settlements schemes should be established, Improvement of rural lifestyle through the provision of basic amenities should be developed and Provision of subsidies, tax rebates, etc to encourage rural dwelling.
