What makes a shop assistant good?

Whatever your job, a plumber, a doctor or a florist, you should do it well. Being a good shop assistant also means doing one's best. A salesclerk is one of the most popular jobs these days, and in fact we see many of them each day.
Whatever shop we enter, a shoe shop, butcher's, chemist's or a boutique, we must speak with a salesperson. Being served by a smiling and kind person is a great pleasure. What is more, very often a few nice words in a shop in the morning make our day good and successful. A shop assistant's good mood seems one of the most important qualities.
Another quality is salesmanship, being able to serve well. A good salesclerk is to make customers interested, to encourage and finally convince that a certain product is good and worth the money it costs. No one, however, likes to be forced to buy anything so a good shop assistant should know when to stop encouraging. That means he or she does the job well. All salespeople are trained to be successful but not all of them learn this skill.
Let me give you an example. Last week I bought a bicycle and actually I was served by two salesmen. What I liked was their professionalism as they presented me with many bikes first, explained differences and finally gave good advice. I am very pleased since the bicycle was inexpensive and good at the same time. The men were kind and patient. I think I shall go to this shop again whenever I need any sport equipment. This feeling proves that good salesclerks make you want to come back to the shop.
Unfortunately, there are shop assistants you do not wish to see again. In fact I do not go to a greengrocer's any more as the saleswoman there is unkind and often makes people buy products they do not really want. It seems the only thing she cares about is the amount of products she manages to sell. You feel you have no right to refuse, you are just a customer that is to be obedient. It is in fact quite opposite; a customer is always right.
In conclusion, in spite of some bad experience we have we must remember there are many shop assistants who do their job well. Being a good salesclerk
means respecting customers and giving professional assistance. A kind, smiling and knowledgeable salesperson is what we need in all shops. There is also another matter to mention, a customer is also obliged to be kind and respect the one who serves him\her. Good manners everywhere!
