I'm writing the summary of the poem "A Gift".I am also including my insight on this poem. It is written by Edgar A. Guest. The poem speaks of life being a gift,Agift which has to be used and not kept in a safe as you keep your treasures. It has both joys and sorrows and one should not boast if he recieves to much of happiness because happiness does not last long. The poet appeals to everyone to live each moment of it. May the full use of it and dont be a miser to hide it somewhere and use your life for the best by doing service to others.
The poem is an eye-opener and points out to the fact that life is SHORT and each one has to use it
wisely ,wisely I say because we have to make many decisions and the after-effects of which we have to face. It brings out the value of Selflessness. Our world today is dominated too much by the word
"I" people are bothered more about self and go to any extent for achieving their ambitions. Ten years ago we had never heard of father raping his own daughter for the sake of lust or prostitution done in public,or of girls freely giving their body to any unknown person just for the sake of a job or for acquiring fame,or of so many crimes done openely during the day and the culprit becoming scotfree, therefore I spoke of
wise decisions .
Life is a gift entrusted to us with a mission, which we have forgotten therfore today we see people hoarding tonnes of worldly treasures and accumulating huge amount of bank balance but yet unhappy. They have forgotten to accumulate good deeds in their account. Character is become of least importance today."
Desire for something more " is the fever of today talking in today's terms " Ye Dil maange more " The poet emphasises that life is not holding on but releasing, setting free, letting loose .
We have become so selfish that we have lost the essence of enjoying the small joys that we recieve but we are rather more interested in grumbling upon the sorrows that bar our ways.At times we forget that it is a cycle of sorrows to be followed by joys and it is continuous. We are not ready to come out of our shells and breathe in the open air, we are so used to the
"I" that we do not want to BE what we are supposed to be.
So let us make up our minds and be firm to live wisely so that no one suffers because of our foolishness. Let us
TRY to be Selfless, and make and attempt to let loose, to come out of our shells,to find hope amidst darkness and to help bring a Smile to someone for:
" A SMILE IS MORE STRONGER THAN A TEAR,
AS IT BRINGS CHEER RATHER THAN FEAR."
