Planet Earth
Did anyone in the UK (or anywhere else for that matter) see “The
11th Hour“, Channel 4 last Sunday night at 7:25pm? It was mind numbingly horrific to put it mildly! No one can now refute the authenticity of science’s most brilliant minds, they have, like others in different fields “done their homework”, so you have to respect their findings! This program set out to shock, and when it had finished I sat pondering as to whether it would impact the minds of many.
The following day, (Bank holiday Monday in the UK) another program related to yesterdays “Life After People“, took us on a trip to a time when Man no longer inhabited this planet, in short man had wiped himself off the map - caused his demise! It showed very graphically what this planet would look like after 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 year. Then went on to show what it would look like after 20, 25, 50 and 100 years, and progressed up to I think 10,000 years after the extinction of mankind.
Having watched both programs, it occurred to me that little has been done so far to reverse the effects of global warming. Generally speaking politicians seem reluctant to go “whole hog” for fear of upsetting those “vested interests“, whereas the scientists involved were blatantly telling us we have to do something - NOW!, I don’t see anyone really taking any notice of them, save a few individuals and bodies that are aware of what needs to be done. It might be that we only have 20 years left!
If that is the case, and remains the case, we as a race are doomed! I have to say that the emerging countries, India and China, to mention just two, are usurping all raw materials they can lay their hands on. This is not helping world prices! however, I’m not condemning them for it, after all, we showed them what we have achieved, and what they could achieve, and now they’ve seen it, they want it! So who is to blame? We are! Unless we can convince these emerging countries that they also have a part to play, we have no hope whatsoever of saving this planet! Personally I think that nothing will be done, I think the worlds population is in a state of apathy, and let’s not forget, there are those that think global warming is a load of BS! So in conclusion, I think that this planet will follow the edicts of that program last Monday night, shall we say it was prophetic? I must say that as a sci-fi writer, it’s like fiction becoming fact. Who will rule next? Will it become a Planet of the Apes, or will ants have their day? One thing is for certain, we won’t be around to see it!
