The main occupations of the people are farming, fishing and hunting. The important agricultural products like coffee,
palm oil, rubber, sugar-cane, maize, rice, cassava and plantains are grown here.
The people of Zaire mainly wear cotton clothes because it is a hot and wet weather.
Majority of Zaire’s population belong to the Bantu tribe. People here speak Bantu language. The people of cities wear modern clothes and their life styles are also modern whereas the villagers lead their life in a traditional style.
In the Kissangani, situated north of Zaire, people are short in stature with dark skin, curly hair and big noses. They are called as pygmies. Their height is about 1.5m. The pygmies live in forests. Hunting is the main occupation of these people. Fruit and honey gathering provide livelihood to them. They live in small huts. These pygmies are also called as nomads.
The capital of Zaire is Kinshasa. It is the largest and the most modern city the country. The other important cities are Lubumbashi, Mbuji-Mayi, Kanaga and Matadi. This Matadi is the biggest port and is known for its railway terminal.
Zaire is rich in its mineral resources. In the south Zaire is the city of Kanaga which is rich in mineral resources. Copper mines and diamond deposits are the major wealth of Zaire. The place is also rich in other minerals like cobalt, cadmium, manganese, zinc and uranium. The Zaire people are largely engaged in mining, textiles, paper, cement, and chemical industries. The other manufactures are tobacco, textile, wood products, and metal items, building materials, food stuffs and beverages.
