The Vindhyas and the Satpuras are the two parallel
Mountain ranges running west to east through the middle of the state. The
main Rivers are the Chambal, Betwa,
Sone, Narmada, Tapati, Mahanadi and the Indravati. Almost the entire state
receives good rainfall, ranging from 30 to 60 inches annually. The climate is
extreme in the north, temperature and breezy in the Malwa Plateau and generally
wet and humid in the eastern and southern parts. The state possesses soils of
almost every type, from the rich black to the dry stony red earth. Nearly
thirty per cent of the state’s area is covered by forests, the most extensive
in the country.

The people of the state are drawn chiefly from two racial
stocks. Those in the northern areas, including the Narmada valley, are broadly
from the indo-Aryan stock. The southern and eastern area contains a sprinkling of
the aboriginal tribes and the Gond and Indo-Dravidian stocks. The adivasis and
Harijans together account for one –third of the total population of the Madhya
Pradesh state.
