The term socialization is used by sociologists, social psychologists and educationalists to refer to the process of learning one’s culture and how to live within it. In other words, socialization is the way someone learns to cope with other people and obtain culture. I believe that socialization is important in our lives because socialization can affect a person’s personality and way of thinking. It can also reinforce the norms and values which are given from the past generations. Without socialization, a person will have peculiar behaviors and will be considered as an abnormal being.
Socialization can affect someone’s personality and way of thinking. Let’s take a look at our daily experience in socializing. I grew as a shy and quiet girl but as time goes by I befriended with a lot of people who are loud and talkative, and then I became more talkative and more confident than before. People adapt to the environment which they lived in, and it affects his or her personality as new people come and give different influence to the personality. But it all happened way back then when we were just a child. We behaved the way our parents told us to behave. When I was a kid, I was taught to be polite and respectful to the older people. From that point I learnt how to behave towards older people and I keep carrying that behavior until now, although some parts of my personality changed.
Socialization can also affect someone’s way of thinking. For instance, I had this thought that if I am nice and kind to everybody then everybody will be nice to me as well. I held this way of thinking until I reached grade 9, when my best friends backstabbed me for no reason at all. I kept on questioning the reason why they did that, because I’ve been really nice and kind to them. But it was just like that. Later I realize that they are not such a loyal companion. The problem was not me but it was them. I started to ignore what they do and I changed my point of view. Now I know that we cannot expect that everybody will like us and be nice to us even though we have tried our best to be nice to them.
Socialization can reinforce norms and values which are given from the past generations. First of all when we were in elementary school, our parents taught us about right or wrong, acceptable or unacceptable and politeness or rudeness. Our parents told us not to burp or fart in public. As we grow older, maybe with some experiences we will learn that if we burp or fart in public our friends will be disgusted and our image will be shameful. Later as I grow older, I was taught about more serious things like boundaries in dating and not to have sex before marriage. Real examples of other people’s experiences were given to prevent me from doing those prohibited things.
Without socialization, a person will have peculiar behaviors and will be considered as an abnormal being. As I discovered Isabelle’s, Genie’s and Oxana Malaya’s experience, I know that isolated children will have difficulties in living normal human’s life. Such as Oxana Malaya whose behavior is similar to dogs. Oxana cannot interact in a normal human way. She barks and woofs, unlike normal human who talks.
As a conclusion, socialization is really important in human’s life. Socialization is really important because it affects someone’s personality, someone’s way of thinking, reinforces norms and values. Without socialization someone will have peculiar behaviors and will be considered as an abnormal being.
