Man and Environmental Pollution

Book Summary   by:doc     Original Author: Prof. Aslam Jaffer
ª

Environmental Pollution is a threatening word. The whole world is suffering from its drastic effects not only the developing nations, but also the developed ones. It has appeared to be the greatest global problem which has agitated the international community and demanded the top most priority for its permanent resolution. The problem has been created by man and he himself has to solve it. From the time immemorial, man has been exploring and using the natural resources for its benefit. He devised countless ways to utilize these resources. In this way, he has made a lot of progress and improved the quality of life. But during this course of progress, he has disturbed the natural environment around him and thus has created problems for the life on the planet earth. He has poisoned the air, made his water sources dirty, made his soil less fertile by his progressing activities. Now the ball is in his court and he has to devise measure for a good and healthy survival on this earth. Among all kinds of pollution, air pollution come the first. We cannot live without air even for a few minutes. Pollution in air is increasing day by day. Fresh air is required by all living things. Inadequate fresh air may cause very serious diseases. It is therefore necessary to have proper ventilation in the houses and buildings so as to have fresh air for inhaling.
The air we are breathing in, is not pure. We are inhaling numerous dangerous substances and chemicals which may cause a big problem for our life on earth. Around the earth, in upper atmosphere there exists a layer called” ozone” which acts as a protective shied for the life on this planet. It strongly absorbs ultraviolet radiations from the sun, and thereby it protects the life on earth from severe radiations which damage such as DNA mutation and skin cancer. This layer is found to be seriously damaged by chemicals called chloroflouro carbons which are used as coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners etc. These chemicals produce chlorine which react with ozone and destroy it. In September to November 85 an ozone hole was detected over Antarctica. The US immediately banned the use of CGC. Some other countries also signed the agreement to reduce pollution. With proper world wide measures, we can somehow lesson the pollution from proceeding any further!
