Urban Planning

Book Summary by: Canaday

Original Author: Marquis D. Canaday
Urban Planning
Urban planning deals with the designing of cities for society. City planning on a massive scale usually
has an architect with a professional Master's degree in regional planning hired by a city administration. The core courses for work such as this is design and statistics, urban law, and urban planning theory/history. It is a broad field which overlaps other fields such as community development, and enviornmental planning.
The metropolitan planning organization is a regional transportation planning body located within many metropolitan areas. Its main responsibilities are the urban areas. Urban planners work with many people at metropolitan planning organizations in order to know how many roads are needed, when and where to provide them. Roads maintenace and building is one few of the economic activities dominated by the private sector of government.
Urban planning often involves urban renewal. It is used to redevelop the aged or aging decayed areas of the inner city within the city metropolises. In spite of the good intentions of urban renewal programs in the past, not all urban planners were cited with much praise. Civic leaders, politicians and even residents saw urban renewal as a way to break up balkanized ethnic groups. Many family owned businesses and neighborhoods were lost in the shuffle to special intrest and commercial development. When newer neighborhoods were completed, former residents were unable to afford the prices of rent and moved elsewhere. This is what prompted the need for the Housing and Urban development creation in the 1960s.
Today, new urbanism is a movement that has become popular. The goal is to reform all aspects of real estate and urban planning. New urbanized neighborhoods contain less tenement styled homes, but more spacious garden apartments and duplexes surrouded by huge grassy areas with good walking pavements to increase exercise and lessure.
