Children are like delicate seedlings in as much as they need assiduous nurturing and tender care their mental faculties to
grow into natural perfection. Premature exposure to hardships not only disrupts their intellectual growth, but also deforms their personality beyond repair. This fact renders the practice of child labor so detestable that no nation, least the humanitarian and welfare-oriented one can afford to make it a permanent feature of its national history. This problem is more common in the Asian countries. Many small children of school going age a re seen
working in workshops, canteens and on the streets laboring under appalling conditions.
There certainly are and have been laws relating to bonded and child labor but hitherto without any strict applications which led to the wanton abuse and violations of children’s rights. Western
countries every now and then make much hullabaloo by means of their efficient information media about the wretched
conditions that the children are working in
poor countries. However, their furor is not entirely based on altruistic considerations as more often than not they use this factor as a tool against the poor
nation to meet their political extortions on the other hand. Their concern also is distorted in the understanding of the issue as the fighters presented by them are usually exaggerated as to how many children are actually working in deplorable conditions in the third world nations.
But this does not provide a justifiable excuse for the fact that nothing worth accumulating has been yet done in Asian countries in this regard. The need of hour is to make concrete steps in order to save the lives of millions of innocent children from falling prey to this evil practice. The destiny of nation is concerned with the destiny of the children. As such the period of their childhood should be carefully watched and scope should be given to every child to develop
noble qualities of head and heart to blossom in the way best suited to them. If this is done, every child will grow into a noble and useful member of the society. But if the negligence is continued as such, the national life of a country will remain a meaningless succession of irrelevant episodes, springing from nothing and returning to nothing.
