I find that the hardest thing for me to accept is the abundance of slavery still in the world today. Before I took this class, I had no idea that slavery was still so numerous. I knew that there was a lot of poverty corruption in the world but never did I think that people were being used in such ways just so the economy can stay high. In the book Disposable People, Kevin Bales talks about how slaves still exist throughout the world and even in developed countries like France and the United States. He also talks about this new kind of slavery is all about business and people use slaves to get rich. When they are done with them, they just throw these people away like trash. In the “old” slavery, slaves were worth money, profits were low, and there was a shortage of potential slaves. Back in the day, slaves were expensive and you had to maintain them. Nowadays, you would just throw them away when you were finished your business. It is just so unbelievable how some people have no heart and just make these people suffer just so they can make a little more money. It’s not that I don’t believe in it but I just hard to accept the idea.
The other day in class was probably one of the saddest videos I have ever witnessed. These innocent kids were just being kidnapped into a life of suffering and cruelty. The sad part was that a lot of the things that we enjoy today is because of the misery of these people. The shoes that we wear and the carpet we stand on may have been made by slaves in Pakistan. The sugar that we enjoy daily and the toys our kids enjoy are made by the slaves in the Caribbean. The shirt on your back and the ring on your finger could have been made by slaves in India. Also, Children are kidnapped and sent to Ghana to pick cocoa beans so that we can have our chocolate. Even worse, they are paid absolutely nothing.
