Studies made recently show that more and more people are going to inhabit the urban areas than the rural ones, in mid-developed or low developed cities, with serious consequences for poverty eradication possibilities or for a clean environment. Therefore, a major consideration has to be over maintaining the ecological equilibrium, the main factor being offered by the type of relationship between nature and the human being. And the connection is represented, as it will be seen, by the agriculture possibilities,-if they are farther or nearer from the respective city, namely if we speak in terms of industrial agriculture or of an urban one.
Urban agriculture is located in the neighbourhood of towns, offering support to that area including the city itself by its products. In the production process it is supplied by the local development parameters and influenced or determined by local rules. While the industrial agriculture has to be submitted to severe reforms, the advantage of urban agriculture, which may be found under different forms- is obvious. Having a garden -to say so- nearby, eventually on the roof for saving the so precious space, leaves much room for a healthy nutrition and more savings to be spent for instance for education.
There are however negative aspects too, such as the clime and the space available, many living creatures having to coexist at the same time per square meter and the local authorities should understand this and offer necessary support. Actually both them and the urban planners -who should consider the necessity to have people with the capability of growing food in towns,-are the main key in promoting the urban agriculture which can assure a sustainable environment. As an international institute for food showed, in the cities it should be paid attention not only to the resistant food to be supported by the urban agriculture, but also to products like diary, being estimated that in following tens of years its contribution will represent almost 30% of the entire urban nutritional spectrum. The system will represent, in comparison with the industrial procedure, a comfort for our entire planet so much stressed at present by physical tensions and poverty, being able to transform it essentially in a place of calm and freshness.
