Jubillee leads campaign against vulture fund ruling. Zambian civil societies including jubilee Zambia have launched a campaign against the ruling by the London High court that Zambia should pay $15.5 million to Donegal International saying doing so will disturb Government’s poverty reduction programme. JCTR, WFC and SACCORD bosses have appealed to Zambians and the International community to reject the claims. This was at the forum for ‘newsmakers’ on “The Vulture fund, should Zambia bear the Burden?” The High court in London ruled that Zambia should pay that large sum of money to A British company based on the Virgin Island being debt which included penalties for Late payments. The IMF defines the Vulture fund as companies that buy the debt of a poor country cheaply when it is about to be written off then sue that country at the full value including interests. Donegal bought a debt of $3.2 from Romania where Zambia had got a loan in 1979. The company was seeking a $55 million before the court decided on $15milion. The civil society organizations have appealed to various bodies including the G8 summit meeting next month to discuss this issue and put an end to this injustice on poor countries. The Zambian constitution should also provide for parliament ratification on all loans obtained by Government to avoid situations such as this one, observed the civil societies. Summary by isaacs
