Please respect UN

In spite of all high talks about the faulty functioning of the UN and the need for its reforms, at the present context of time, there is no better institution available than the UN for the resolution and mediation of global conflicts.

But, the problem is how the big powers respond to the directions of the UN. If the directive of the UN is convenient for them, they heed the UN and if it runs counter to their interests, they simply ignore it.

Now, in this Guardian article, we know how the UN is serious about Guantánamo Bay detention centre run by the US. In its 54-page report the UN asked Washington to close down the detention centre since the treatment of detainees there is amounting to torture, cruelty, and the treatment is very inhuman and very degrading.

The investigation was conducted very laboriously for over 18-month.The envoys interviewed freed prisoners, lawyers and doctors and collected a huge body of information on the detainees, held for the last four years. The detainees are not allowed access to US judicial oversight.

The UN came to this conclusion after weighing down and analyzing a great number of evidences about mistreatment. Actually, the photo printed in the article itself speaks volumes about the situation in Guantánamo Bay detention centre.

The US is very anxious about the Iran nuclear issue and tried its best to refer the issue to the UN security council so that the UNSC can impose sanctions on Iran and thereby compelling Iran to act on the interests of the US and surrender before the US authorities. Otherwise, Iran will be shown the older way in which the Iraq is now passing through.
Since the Guantánamo Bay detention centre issue and verdict of the UN on this issue is totally against the US, the Bush administration naturally dismissed the report.
The US ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Kevin Moley, faulted the report for not taking into account of evidence provided by the US.
