ABSTRACT BY Dr. JITENDRA KUMAR SHARMA

Towards a civilization alliance

Kofi Annan, announced THE ALLIANCE of Civilizations
project last summer. It has every chance to become a global endeavor because a
cultural divide threatens the world.

It is a challenge for international as well as intranational relations in
Europe and elsewhere. It involves many intertwined cultural and religious
interests. The most prominent issue is the divide between the Islamic and
Western worlds.

The cultural gap is becoming more and more difficult to bridge as prejudices
and misconceptions fortified by fixed mindsets ensnare people. The fast growing
gap in the living standards lends the problem with mega dimensions.

The impending collision is being fuelled by two trouble spots, namely, Iraq
and Palestine. The Western G-SAVE policy — Global Struggle Against Violent
Extremism — has its own reasons but the Islamic perspective on it turns it into
a war one civilization is waging against another rather than its being a
defensive strategy. The advancing of global freedom and democracy too is,
therefore, viewed as a convenient way of promoting the West's own agenda in the
garb of alleviating poverty and environmental degradation.

This is where the Alliance of Civilizations comes in to action. It has the
task of developing a new relationship between governments and societies. It
will be a very long and painful road to travel. It will require concerted
efforts against poverty, illiteracy, WMD proliferation, inhuman ideologies, and
other sources of terror. It will also need apt management of conflicts so as to
keep them from turning into open hostilities.

This will demand extensive education, development schemes, stepped-up
religious dialogues, more open societies, cultural networking, and similar
other programs. The Alliance realizes that much more needs to be done before
the nations and communities could be persuaded to understand and tolerate one
another and avoid violent conflicts and violent resolutions of conflicts.

Fusion appears to be the key to success in this task. Every government and
every civil institution has to do much more to outlaw violent xenophobia.

The world seeks to use all available resources to encourage tolerant,
respectful, and non-antagonistic concepts and ideas for THE ALLIANCE of
Civilizations to come about.
