Prostitude's Daughter

Article Summary   by:Punaha     Original Author: Article as appeared in THE TIMES OF INDIA
ª

New Profession for a Prostitude's Daughter MALTI is a prostitute who hails from Ahmedabad, India. She is not just an ordinary or another prostitute. She has recently sent her daughter to Australia to pursue Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering. This, she professed on the occasion of INTERNATIONAL WOMAN’S DAY on 8th March 2006. Malti, a proud mother, not so proud of her own profession became closer to her daughter after she revealed about her sex work for living and raising her. Malti hails from a well-to-do family and though an educated woman she could not complete graduation studies as her parents married her off when she was in the midst of her B.A course. Her husband walked away from her life for another woman when she was 25 years old. Malti’s parents could not support their divorcee daughter for long. She went out and tried jobs like office clerk and telephone operator but the pay was not enough to bring up her daughter and give her good education. Subsequently Malti took up to prostitution, though reluctantly as there was hardly any other option. Last year she could manage to pay Rs.200,000 towards admission fee for her daughter’s Master’s Degree Course at an Australian University which was a big moment for her. Her daughter gets a partial scholarship from the University and Malti has to send Rs.100,000 annually towards course fee for the next four years. Leave alone education, Malti recollects how confused a woman she was 20 years ago, having no idea how to feed herself and her toddler daughter. The daughter is proud of her mother for her thoughts about her future and carrying on with high spirits towards reaching that goal. After 4 years from now, Malti plans to join her daughter at Australia when she finishes her course and finds a job.
