Bush boys begin nuclear deal hard sell.

PTI in its report dated 9th March from Washington says how
the Bush administration has embarked upon hard selling the
recently concluded nuclear deal between USA and India. The
White House has countered the criticism that the deal would
encourage an arms race in South Asia by a point-to-point
rebuttal.

The explanation by the White House tries to alley fears
that the deal may set a bad precedent for Iran, North Korea
or Israel by saying that it is not fare to bracket India
with rogue regimes such as Korea or Iran. The case of
Israel is also different because it has not yet declared
itself to be a nuclear power. Its energy needs are also
minimal.

On the other hand, India requires huge quantity of energy
to feed its burgeoning economy. Nuclear power can provide
that energy. Therefore the deal will enable India to
augment its energy requirements by separating its civil and
military nuclear reactors and placing the civil ones under
IAEA inspection and control. The recent treaty covers most
of India’s existing nuclear reactors under the purview of
International surveillance, leaving only a few of the
military to pursue their weapons programme. All upcoming
nuclear reactors are also proposed to be covered under
international watch.

Bush administration did not envisage such a deal with
Pakistan because its needs were different.
