Daily Echo town and country edition dated March 13, 2006 is a local newspaper available here in Southampton:
The big news is that Hampshire troops are on the brink of their toughest tour! And they are POISED TO GO TO IRAQ! Oh! that that awful war would end!! Still it seems like the end as yet is still not in slight:
The graphically produced photos of Line of Fire shows Hampshire troops beings trained to deal with petrol bombs at an exercise at their base in Germany/ echoes of Belfast Northern Ireland and THE TROUBLES! Many a night I recall the petrol bomb dumped at the back of the garden when I was staying in a chalet /behind the peace wall/ drawn up to separate the Catholics and the Protestants! During, Holy Cross Row, there were cars set on fire and petrol bombs were a nightly experience! Golly! I was frightened! I got the bus and went into town, stayed in the Europa Cafe and had a cup of Frank's wonderful Columbian Coffee; however, on my way home, our bus was attacked - bricks and bottle - came careering through the windows of the bus, and our driver had to keep on driving to get out of the Target Area! We were all badly shocked and a few yards up the road, got off the bus and walked through the Army Checkpoint and went back through another line of armoured vehicles and arrived in the Chalet only to find a petrol bomb in the garden!
This time the first Battalion Princess of Wales Royal Regiment will be flown out to the troubled country! Oh! that I could go too, out to Iraq!! Afterall I have all the experience necessary to do the job in Iraq!
Musical debut at the local Mayflower Theatre in Southampton! I used to go their regularly with my family - those were the days! A pint sized actor (I thought they meant ME) will tread the boards at The Mayflower in its new production of a musical entitled MISS SAIGON!!
Red Funnel line is important if like me you travel over to mainland Europe off and on from Southampton : They are currently investigating Friaday afternoon's dramatic ferry crash when Red Falcon smashed into docks at Southampton City's Town Quay! Goodness gracious me!
The Queen's 80th Birthday celebrations on April 21 are mentioned too! The Royal Lady has obviously, got limitless energy!!
Posters and how we all love graphic work - are featured here from Winchester - a nearby City where a school boy is hoping to fight world poverty thru design of his poster in line with Fairtrade market in this city this month!
Again, one of my favourite shots is featured in the Daily Echo:
it is the SUNSET at Southampton docks pictured from Weston Shore photograph by Daily Echo reader/Maurice Squibb!
Makes me feel quite the poet in these Southampton Waters! I love Sunsets and Sunrises too! Perfect timing, good rhyming, read on ...
