The malice of the female foeticide in India
Yesterday’s morning Times brought the horrible news article of a female foeticide racket being busted in Haryana. This brings to the mind one shloka-
"Almighty God, you have created this womb. Women may be born somewhere else but sons should be born from this womb" - Atharva Veda 6/11/3 -
During ''Punsawan sanskar'' (a ceremony performed during third month of pregnancy) the afore-mentioned mantras are meant to be chanted to “bless” the womb with a male baby during the times of the vedas.
The despicable malpractice of hatred towards the girl babies has been continuing till today since when such hateful mantras disseminated their anti-feamle bias so barefacedly. No one , even in today’s India, which boasts of its open market, globalization, post colonial intellectualism, continually progressive societal patterns, its increasing share and impact in the world politics, seems to be eager to sing a lullaby when a girl baby is born into a family. Instead the nascent baby girl finds the world as a place of constant neglect and deprivation, unwantedness and humiliation, insult and injury, brutality and torture.
The heinous gender specific killing is exclusive only to the society of the Homo sapiens. Yet amazingly we boast of being the most rational, progressed of all the living species. the instances of infanticide is traced in some species of snakes and fishes for food; in some male apes to make procreative advances toward the mothers. But there is no evidence of gender discriminatory killing in the entire animal world. Humans only can perpetrate such an unnatural genocide.
The idea of gender selective foeticide is relatively newer than female infanticide. The easily accessible and inexpensive gender detection methods like the amniocentesis and the ultra sound diagnosis have come within the reach of the ill minded crooks of the patriarchal society.
Some dishonest doctors deliberately inform the parents the sex of the baby hoping a monetary gain
In India, because of the rampant misuse of such an easy foetal sex determination process the government has deemed the sex determination tests illegal. However the incidents of such detection and subsequent abortion of girl babies continue to threaten the steadily shrinking female population.
In some cases, the newborn baby girls are cruelly murdered by administering poison, feeding the baby with unhusked rice(which causes their windpipes burst), strangulation, deliberate starving the baby, burying alive, drowning in the river or wells, abandoning in trash dumps and all other possible means.
Another serious concern is the steady neglect of the girl child by the family, which provides them with less food, lack of sanitation, less care, poor medical attention. the male children of the family in such cases are preferred over the girls. A considerable number of girls meet premature death due to such treatments. the gradually shrinking sex ratio of boys and girls in some areas of the country aptly illustrates this.
Innumerable abandoned girls find their way to the orphanages which cannot fully promise a decent and respectable future for these girls.
