The researching Marine geologist Masaaki Kimura a marine geologist believes that the undersea rock formations off the Coast of Yonagni Island in South western tip of Japan are actually the ruins of the ancient city swallowed by the sea. The irregular rock outcrops is spread over 1 square km and has several mounds of rubble The unnaturally smooth rocks forming a staircase like structure near the island’s shore were first noticed in 1985 by a scuba diving tourist. Since then Kimura has researched to prove that these rocks form part an ancient city as mentioned in the fable of Mu ― the Asian equivalent of Atlantis. Kimura is a professor at Ryukyu University and the chairman of the non-profit Marine Science and Culture Heritage Research Association. He feels that the disposition and design of the ruins suggest the existence of an ancient Roman city with triumphal arch like statue on left side of a Colosseum and shrine over the hill. Believed to have sunk 3000 years ago due to an earthquake the city had a small castle in the middle and several shrine like structures. Kimura’s claim is disputed by several scientists who attribute the ruins to natural phenomena like tidal waves and volcanic activities. Discovery of very few artifacts like clay pots or weapons suggesting that humans lived amongst the rock formations further challenge Kimura’s claims. Kimura, however, maintains that he getting close to a conviction that this is a mysterious civilisation lost to earthquake activities in the Pacific Ocean
