The editorial page of Times of India of Oct 17, 07 discusses the problems of inequality, in the whole world. No doubt poverty appears to be on the decline, but inequality appears to be increasing. IMF has stated that per capita income over regions has risen, but so has inequality. It is desirable that every person should get equal opportunities. Then it is up to each person to make achievements, as per his capabilities. In democracy people are freely allowed to move within the country, to obtain and utilize economic opportunities. But factors like literacy and health also need to be considered, otherwise opportunities can’t be utilized fairly. If starting conditions are not equal, politically it will not be a stable condition. IMF blames this inequality, on the higher value being given to the skilled labour. Such inequalities are in India, China and also in USA. IMF suggests better opportunities for education, providing of finance, free movement of workers, dissociating health care from employment etc. Equality will bring in social and political stability.
