` NIGERIA'S BID FOR UN SECURITY SEAT Recently,the Indian Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh was on a two-day visit to Nigeria. The visit afforded India to and NIT COMMITTED A LOT OF HUMAN AND MATERIAL RESOURCES IN THE PEACE Nigeria an opportunity to reaffirm their position on the reform of the United Nations security council .Besides, Nigeria restated its support for India's permanent membership of an extended UN Security Council.On its part,India expressed its readiness to respect Africa's concensus regarding a new permanent membership from Africa. For a decade, negotiations on expanding the permanent membership of this UN organ have been contentious.Since its inception over 60 years ago, the Council has only had United States,Britain,France,Russia and China as permanent members.The bid to extend the permanent seat of the Council threw up such contenders as Germany,Japan,India and Brazil.In Africa,Nigeria,South Africa and Egypt want to occupy the exalt seat. Among the African contenders,Nigeria has the best credentials.For instance,in West Africa,the has been a stabilizing force.
it lead a regional peace keeping force called ECOWAS Monitoring Group ,which brought peace to Liberia a few years ago.it committed a lot of human and material resources in that peace effort.When the Liberian war ended in 2003,Nigeria offered a soft landing for its erstwhile president and warlord,Charles Taylor.The man was in exile at Calabar until 2006 when the government of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo transferred him to the war crime tribunal in Sierra Leone.
