POLITICAL CONDITIONS IN PAKISTAN
Political conditions in Pakistan have been under discussion in various newspapers and magazines, for quite some time. India today of Nov 26, 07 discusses this subject. Benazir Bhutto is termed as the saviour of democracy, by her supporters. It appears that she holds the key to democracy in Pakistan. Earlier, all the other opposition parties had called for resignation of President Musharraf. She has also announced a long march from Lahore to Islamabad. There were fears of protests and chaos on the streets, and the opposition getting united. She has come in the forefront as the main opposition to Musharraf, after 8 years of her self-exile. Earlier to this, there were many stories of favourable considerations of the cases against Benazir Bhutto. Massive reception accorded on her arrival and the bomb attack, all added to her strength. She tried to unite all opposition parties, even to the extent of boycotting the Jan 2008 elections. There were pressures from all sides like media, lawyers and students etc. Hence she came around to make the call for Musharraf to step down. Musharraf has been having opposition from various groups of people in Pakistan, on his handling of various matters. USA also does not want chaos in Pakistan, due to militancy problems in northern areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Hence decisions of Benazir Bhutto will be very crucial, regarding the future of Pakistan.
